“GOOD TROUBLE”

Designers: Katie Archibald-Woodward and Claire Barnes
MAGGIE WHITE SAYS: “John Lewis motivated us to make this mural by his storied history and the philosophies he lived his life by, as well as his unwavering dedication to the rights of ALL people. Our admiration of him and his inspiring work made our decision to make his HERO mural easy. As John Lewis agreed, ‘The goals that we have in using the art of murals in the public space are focused on impacting people’s lives in a positive way. We craft artwork that offers a sense of hope, self-worth and wellbeing; and that ultimately improves the viewers’ sense of connectedness. John Lewis taught us about ‘Good Trouble,’ that when something is fundamentally wrong, we as humans have a responsibility to collectively stand up against injustice, fear and intolerance; AND to combat it with understanding, kindness and love. It was John Lewis’ belief, and ours, that building a beloved community, one that is inclusive, tolerant and just for ALL people, begins with Human Dignity. It is one of the most basic rights that everyone should be afforded; and unfortunately, sometimes we have to be reminded of its importance. Art is an engaging and perfect way to remind us.”
